Beginning in 2018, Powell Wellness Center (PWC) has achieved certification annually by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA), the country’s leading organization dedicated to medically integrated fitness facilities.
The certification process involves an in-depth, on-site review of a facility’s adherence to internationally recognized Standards and Guidelines for Medical Fitness Facilities. The Medical Fitness Association Facility Certification is recognized as a mark of excellence in the health and wellness industry. PWC is one of only two fitness centers certified by the MFA in Virginia.
“We are proud to be members of a select group of industry leaders who are committed to improving health and promoting wellness through exercise. The initial certification and annual recertification process represent a real team effort between our staff and volunteers that yields benefits to our members and the community,” said Eric Good, PWC’s director.
PWC offers an array of health, fitness, and wellness classes and programs. The entire staff is dedicated to helping its members as well as community members achieve the many benefits of regular exercise, physical activity, and leading a preventive lifestyle.
A unique aspect of an MFA-certified facility is that a medical director provides oversight for medical fitness programs. A volunteer Medical Advisory Committee also advises staff in the development and oversight of fitness programs designed for people with chronic health conditions like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, and arthritis.
“The importance of offering this integrated wellness approach across all age groups and income levels is vital to our community in helping to achieve better health both mentally and physically,” said PWC medical director Dr. Brevard Wallace.
Services available to the community:
- monthly Health Matters information session on topics of current public health interest
- flu shots, blood pressure checks and blood glucose testing
- wellness programs that support nutrition and conditions such as arthritis
- fitness scholarships for people who are referred by their physician, meet income guidelines and actively participate in an exercise program
- FitScripts doctor-referred 6-week program of group exercise provides specialized support to individuals with a variety of medical conditions, including cancer and diabetes, plus orthopedic and pulmonary issues and more.
- swim lessons
In response to a question about what MFA certification means to the members at PWC, Good responded, “MFA certification requires that our staff have industry-specific credentials to ensure high quality programming. Our staff are well-trained in emergency response and ensuring member safety. It also means that we work closely with local physicians to help our members prevent illness and chronic disease, and recover more quickly and completely after a medical event. PWC offers a member experience that simply isn’t available elsewhere in our region.”
