In addition, group exercise classes are a great way to meet new people and enhance your exercise routine — no surprise that group exercise classes are one of the most popular activities at PWC! Led by talented and qualified instructors, our classes provide a way for members of all fitness levels to develop an exercise program that responds to their needs and interests and that is diverse and fun.

“The instructors make you feel like you matter. … I have a hard time keeping up with the more fit people but in the classes the instructors tend to the needs of each one of us without making us feel like we are doing things wrong. I don’t know how you do it but it helps so much to know WE matter and it is about us and not about the instructor’s fitness level.” – Patricia, PWC member

Our Facility
Swimming is a healthy activity that adds variety to your fitness routine, regardless of age or fitness level. The water supports your weight and doesn’t strain your back, hips, or knees. At Powell Wellness Center (PWC), our functional Aquatic Arena is the perfect environment for treating rehabilitation patients as well as providing health and fitness benefits for all ages.
Our Therapeutic, Unique, Rehabilitation, Two-Temperature Lap and Exercise pool is turtle-shaped and aptly named. The PWC TURTTLE features:
We also offer a hot tub, sauna, and steam room, which are designed to help with functionality concerns, stiff joints, and toxin removal from the body through perspiration. Enjoy the PWC Aquatic Arena for an excellent swimming, therapy, or stress-relief experience!
Children age 16 and up that are members may use the TURTTLE pool during all hours of operation.
Swim lessons
The goal of all our certified swim instructors is to assist you in making progress in your aquatic comfort level and swimming ability. Our swim lessons are based on the American Red Cross (ARC) Learn to Swim program.

We offer a variety of programs and resources to educate our members and the community on healthy living and overall well-being. Join us for Health Matters – a free and educational presentation open to the public on a current health or wellness topic. During these sessions, a member of the local medical community or our own in-house specialists share their expertise on health topics and answer your questions. Past presentations have focused on heart health, living with diabetes, proper nutrition, living well with a chronic condition, shaping up for summer, and more.
Our wellness services include tests that can be conducted for individuals or groups. These include:
A1C test: Check your blood glucose levels of the past 3 months. $25.
Body Gem Metabolic Rate: Through the Body Gem breath test, learn what your metabolism is burning and what your caloric intake should be. $30.

“I was looking for guidance so that I’d be doing things right rather than wrong in my workout. To keep myself physically fit, it made sense to do personal training. It was a good decision.” – Elizabeth, PWC member
At Powell Wellness Center (PWC), our personal trainers’ mission is to empower and educate members of our community to enhance their lives through individualized fitness programming. Whether you seek to lose weight, increase muscle tone, boost sport performance, or improve your overall health and wellness, a PWC personal trainer can design a program to best meet your goals.
PWC’s nationally certified personal trainers will customize your exercise routine to serve you. Our trainers assess your current level of fitness, taking into account any physical challenges or limitations, create a personalized plan, and implement a program to meet your needs.
There are several flexible personal training package options for either 30-minute or 60-minute sessions for individuals, partners, and small groups.
Take the first step: submit your training inquiry!
The yearly Wellness Assessment is included in your PWC membership. During the assessment, a member’s height and weight, blood pressure, strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, balance, hip/waist and body fat will be measured. Using this data in tandem with a review of the member’s health history and goals, an exercise specialist will work with the member to develop a plan to enhance and track their personal fitness level and support improved health. The assessment may be set up at the membership desk. An equipment orientation is also included as a free benefit.
Your results on the assessment can be affected by your immediate sleep, diet and exercise actions. Please make sure you follow the following pre-assessment guidelines to avoid invalid test results.
Pre-assessment guidelines

PWC created FitScripts from the Exercise is Medicine® program, an initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association (AMA). It is a physician-referral program designed for those who could benefit from exercise but who may have a chronic condition or physical limitation such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, pulmonary disease, or orthopedic concern that is preventing them from regular exercise.
Through FitScripts, physicians prescribe exercise by referring patients to PWC for an eight-week program of supervised sessions in a small group setting ($50/member, $99/non-member; scholarships available).
Specialized pool and gym classes in our FitScripts program address:
All 8-week programs include:
Download the Medical Fitness Referral form for your doctor. Participants must be referred to FitScripts by their doctor.
For additional information, contact Whitney Propps, PWC director & medical program leader at 540-445-5388 or wpropps@culpeperwellness.org or exercise specialist Bobby Zajkowski at 540-321-4252 or bzajkowski@culpeperwellness.org
Attire
It’s important to be comfortable when working out. Proper athletic attire is required and typically means athletic shirts and tops, shorts, or workout pants. Shirts must be worn at all times. Jeans, street shoes, sandals, or office shoes are not allowed on the fitness floor. Sandals may be worn in the locker rooms and aquatic areas. Water shoes are highly recommended for aquatic classes.
Hydration
Hydration is essential for a safe and effective workout. We encourage you to drink lots of water or an electrolyte replacement beverage when exercising. It’s mandatory to bring water and a towel to all cycling classes, since you’ll really work up a sweat.
Attendance
All non-fee-based exercise classes are first come, first served. For your safety and the consideration of other members, there is no admittance to group exercise classes five minutes after classes have started. If you need to leave the class early, please inform the instructor.
Fee-Based Classes
Small group training classes are offered at an additional fee. These classes require pre-registration and payment in advance.
