The powerful benefits of movement & music

There was moving and grooving at the Parkinson’s support group gathering this month as group fitness instructor & personal trainer Katie Hutchins shared the joys and benefits of music-based movement!

A key takeaway: motion is lotion that lubricates your joints, and any movement done at a person’s own comfort level is good movement! Katie led the group in short routines with shoulder rolls, knee lifts, arm circles, extended arm pushes and, of course, toe tapping, all to fun music. Even a finger flutter gets the “lotion” going! Many of the movements were drawn from Katie’s Chair One & Seated Strength class. In addition to the physical benefits, Katie talked about mood & cognitive benefits of music-based movement.

The support group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 11:30 am. Participation is free and open to the public. Inquiries may be addressed to facilitator Virginia Stanley, vawstanley@gmail.com.
