Members of Powell Wellness Center members and their friends and family are invited to participate in Walk 10K, an annual worldwide walking challenge that will take place May 10-16. Participants in Walk 10K are encouraged to walk 10,000 steps a day for a total of 70,000 in a week. You may pick up your Walk 10K log card at the front desk.
What is Walk 10K? Walk 10K is sponsored by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA) to promote walking as a low-impact physical activity with many health benefits. As a member of the MFA, Powell Wellness Center hosted Walk 10K in 2017, 2018 and 2019 (our winning year!), accumulating a total of 137,918,822 steps – WOW – shout out to everyone who contributed to that amazing total! Walk 10K was not held in 2020 and we look forward to seeing the steps count for 2021!
Walking is great exercise! The benefits of walking are many, including reduced risk of heart disease and stroke by reducing cholesterol, improving blood pressure, and promoting weight loss. Walking also helps build stronger bones and muscles and improve balance. Moreover, it costs nothing, is low impact, is appropriate for all ages, and can be done anywhere. Walk on the PWC track, walk around your home, walk around the block … every step counts.
And this year, your steps may also count to the Walk Skyline Drive challenge, happening through May 31.
Register and report your Walk 10K steps by turning in your log by May 31 – you’ll be entered in a drawing for prizes.
If you are interested in participating, pick up your log card at the front desk and get those steps in! If you’d like a pedometer, please ask at the front desk.
